Background

Working from home broadens the range of options accessible to a wide range of enterprises in terms of how they operate and structure themselves over time. With the commencement of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, some companies have found that working from home allows them to keep their businesses going while prioritizing their own health and well-being, as well as the health of their employees and customers, as part of their public health concerns. Working from home is becoming more popular in advance of the coronavirus pandemic, as many employers see benefits to their businesses and improved work-life balance for their staff. However, the benefits of working from home are not the only considerations; there are also some other concerns. Let’s take a look at these two aspects;

Pros to employees working from home

As the number of employees working from home increases, both online and offline organizations will have more potential to grow in terms of client interactions, communication, marketing, and other aspects of business engagement with regards to their successful hard work, in detail:

  1. Increased Productivity — Because there is less stress and distraction at home than in the office, management staffs feel more at ease and relaxed, allowing them to work for longer periods of time in their own environment with greater attention and efficiency than they could in the office.
  2. Ability to adapt — Working from home allows employees to transition between jobs quickly, whether it’s taking customer calls, sending emails, or keeping track of transactions. Working from home also allows you to do tasks during the day or on weekends. This could help you meet specific company needs, such as trading with customers in different time zones.
  3. Enhance your inner capabilities — Home-based employment may simply enable your company’s employees to contribute new ideas, solve problems, and learn and work at their leisure. Unless other organizations do not allow employees to work from home, this could provide your organization a competitive advantage.
  4. Benefits of technology — As you may be aware, technological advancements such as improved social platforms like Skype and Microsoft Teams have made it easier for businesses to continue and maintain their production systems at home.
  5. Less need for regular holidays — Work from home allows your staff to take fewer vacations because they may work at their own speed and spend more time with their families, minimizing the need for vacations. However, it is critical that your firm provides necessary vacations when they are needed, as per its policy.

Cons to employees who work from home

Though there are certain drawbacks to working from home, the majority of them apply to those who work from home filled rather than portion:

  1. Work from home does not suit everyone — Work from home does not suit everyone because it depends on each individual’s personality and capabilities. For example, some employees may find it difficult to deal with customers online and communicate their products to the market and customers, while others may have personal issues that prevent them from working from home. For example, if they have children, they may be unaware of the boundaries and cause disruption during the day.
  2. Negative mental health issues — If your employees find it uneasy to find a work and life balance and between daily routines then this transition could cause a negative impact on their mental health. Encourage your employees to form a work habit, create a dedicated workplace, and set limits for other family members to aid in this process. Facilitate regular talks and team catch-ups to give employees more opportunities to stay engaged. Eating well and exercising on a regular basis can also aid with mental health, especially if they are part of a regular pattern.
  3. Reduced employee morale — When people work from home on their own, it can be difficult to sustain team spirit.
  4. Poor broadband speeds — You should be aware that, depending on where your employees live, they may not be able to get broadband speeds that allow them to do their jobs properly, e.g., rural broadband is notoriously slow.
  5. Staff feeling isolated — In general, employees who work from home may feel isolated because they do not have the same opportunities to renew their minds as those who work in an office. To guarantee that corporate employees do not feel isolated, it is critical that they keep track of their performance, such as ensuring that communication is consistent and work accomplishments.

As a part of your professional life, it is essential to prioritize your health and well-being. Making time for quality sleep and scheduled exercise won't make you healthier, but it could improve the quality of your work. Study shows that people who deal with constant stress at work and who barely sleeps and who discord their personal lives pay no attention to their physical health and well-being which does not show up full work energy.

You are the same person in both aspects of life, no matter how efficiently you divide your personal and professional lives — including constructing tight boundaries between the three entities will always be leakage. It’s only a matter of time when you’re stressed at work that it affects your energy outside of work, your relationships with family and friends, and your overall happiness. Similarly, if you’re having trouble outside of work, it’ll eventually show up in your job performance.

This can create a vicious cycle, especially for remote workers who work and live in the same space and find it difficult to disconnect totally from their jobs. Workplace stress contributes to personal dissatisfaction, which leads to further workplace stress, and so on. The best way to avoid a downward spiral is to make proactive efforts to prioritize your self-care both at and outside of work.

  • A quality sleep

For start, high-quality sleep must be prioritized. While some people have a harder time sleeping than others, there are actions that anyone may take to help them sleep better. Forming a consistent sleep routine is a simple first step. Try setting a bedtime for yourself and adhering to it for a week. Put your phone, laptop, and other personal electronics away an hour before bedtime and try reading a calm book for thirty to sixty minutes.

While this will take some getting used to, you will soon realize that it is easier to fall asleep at night and that you are more rested when you wake up. When working remotely, it’s extremely crucial to establish a night routine. It’s all too easy to be sucked into work late at night and not disconnect until way past your desired sleep.

Working till 2:00 a.m. and then starting again at 7:00 a.m. may appear to be a short-term strategy to demonstrate your commitment to your job, but it will simply burn you out and limit your value at work in the long run.

  • A regular exercise routine

Physical activity or exercise can help you stay in better shape and lower your chance of acquiring diseases including type 2 diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Physical activity and exercise can enhance your health both now and in the future. Most significantly, regular exercise can help you live a better life, improve your mood, and mental focus.

Doing physical activities on a regular basis can help you make faster decisions and regulate your appetite. A morning workout might help you clear your mind and relieve tension that might make you feel sluggish throughout the day.

There is no one-size-fits-all exercise. The most important thing is to figure out what works best for you. To get the blood flowing, you can take short meditation breaks, get up and pace about your home office, or even do some planks or burpees. While these quick activities won’t entirely improve your cumulative stress level right away, doing them on a regular basis can help you relax throughout the workweek and over time.

  • Responsibility and participation among peers

Finally, discussing self-care with teammates is beneficial. Offer to be a deliverable for someone on your team, someone they can go to when they need to gripe or generate solutions for greater self-care. If you enjoy yoga, running, or another type of exercise, reach out to your teammates who share your interests and discuss best practices for integrating it into your workplace.

You might even consider organizing a friendly wellness competition among your friends to hold one another responsibilty. Many companies have launched these kind of company-wide wellness initiatives, and if yours hasn’t, you can try to create one yourseleves.

In conclusion, The coronavirus epidemic has provided some companies with a realistic understanding of how it affects their business and employees, who may not have previously regarded working from home as an option for their employees. It has given employers firsthand knowledge with the benefits and drawbacks of working from home. This experience can be quite useful in determining the future direction of employees’ working practices.
